Quote1 And this morning, I, uh, woke up in the woods. And my arms were just all covered in this, like, red mud.
So what do you think happened? Making pottery in your sleep?
No, I woke up in the woods.
Listen... sometimes staying out here just gets into your head. Quote2
― Jake Fischer and Ellen Adams

Lights Out is the third episode of the Alan Wake prequel live action mini-series, Bright Falls. This episode was released on the Bright Falls website on May 4, 2010.

Synopsys[]

Jake wakes after another blackout, alone in the woods behind his motel. Turning to Ellen for help, she warns that he should leave town. Meanwhile, Sam the motel owner discovers that someone's breaking his lights and decides to fix the problem.[1]

Jake Fischer wakes up in the woods; his clothes are soiled and his hands are covered with what seems to be reddish mud. Meanwhile, Daniel Smith watches him from afar. When Jake notices him, the young boy flees, with the reporter trying to call out for him. Jake then hears Sam Smith calling out for his son and realizes that he is actually in the vicinity of the Mountain Air Motel.

Later, Jake drives to the offices of the Bright Falls Record. Inside, Ellen Adams and a group of her coworkers laugh as they listen to a story. Jake is greeted by Ellen and asks her if they can speak in private. As Ellen sees the scribbles and drawings that Jake apparently made during his interview with Dr. Hartman, she asks him if the doctor noticed anything, but Jake does not think so. He then explains that he also woke up in the woods with his hands covered in reddish "mud". Ellen ironically says that he is making pottery in his sleep, but Jake denies that to be the case. Ellen then claims that being in Bright Falls “just gets into your head”. Jake states that he is now done with his story, to which Ellen responds that she knows. Accompanying him to his car, Ellen tells him that he can call her should he need anything and the two share a hug. She then adds that, as soon as he finishes his story, he should return home and clear his head. Jake tells her that that was the reason he traveled to Bright Falls in the first place, but Ellen insists he should leave.

At the Mountain Air Motel, Sam and Daniel are walking back to the motel with cleaning supplies when they hear a noise coming from nearby. Sam signals to his son and the boy runs off. At the back of the motel, Sam finds that the light bulbs have been smashed. He throws the broken bulbs in a trash can filled with them. He then tries to replace one of the bulbs, but his arm cannot reach the socket due to a low back pain. As he adjusts his orthopedic belt, he hears noises coming from the woods behind him. Back at the reception, his son helps him put on a hunting vest beneath his jacket before he grabs a shotgun. As dusk falls, Sam steps outside and heads into the woods, while Daniel watches him from a window.

While searching the woods, Sam pauses to fire his shotgun. As he reloads, the spent shell is ejected from the weapon and lands on the ground behind him. He then hears noises coming from nearby and backs away, but he trips over the discarded shell and falls to the ground, injuring his back. Unable to move, Sam begins to laugh uncontrollably before he is dragged away by an unseen entity.
