Sam and Jake at the Mountain Air Motel

At night, Jake Fischer drives his damaged car to the Mountain Air Motel. Arriving at the place, he parks in front of the lodging. After getting out of the vehicle, he notices someone smoking in a dark corner. The man, Sam Smith, steps forward and asks the reporter if he is Jake, which he confirms. The two enter the motel, where Sam's son, Daniel, is sitting at the front desk. Jake's attention is drawn to a collection of hunting rifles and firearms displayed on one of the walls. Sam informs him where the bathroom is and that, due to the card machine being broken, he will have to pay in cash. Noticing that the reporter is staring at his collection, he then adds that he must pay on time, to which Jake agrees. As Sam leads him to his room, Jake comments on the quietness of the surroundings and jokingly asks if he got rid of all the wood critters, but the motel owner ominously warns him that "it's quiet ones [he needs] to worry about". He then unlocks the motel room door and hands Jake the key. Inside, Jake takes a quick look at the room before lying down on the bed. As he listens to the ceiling fan spinning above, he begins to fall asleep. However, he then hears a strange noise coming from outside his room and gets up. Jake opens the curtains to find that it is already daytime.

Jake drives through town while listening to local radio host Pat Maine discussing the upcoming Deerfest. At the Oh Deer Diner, Rose Marigold is watching an interview of Alan Wake on her laptop when she notices Jake enter. Rose greets him and Jake expresses his surprise to see her still there, jokingly asking if she ever sleeps. The two then notice a woman, Ellen Adams, waving at Jake. Rose comments that she now understands why she is wearing makeup. Ellen approaches Jake with enthusiasm, but he simply greets her with a handshake and remarks that it is nice to see her again. Hiding her disappointment, Ellen agrees and the two sit down. Jake asks her how things are, to which she replies with "the same". Ellen, in turn, asks him how Libby is, to which Jake initially replies with "good" before also stating "the same". Ellen asks him to clarify, but decides to change the subject, noting that Jake is on Bright Falls for business, which he ironically refers to as "the standard below the fold puffery". Ellen tells him not to expect much as it is Bright Falls. As he looks around at the other customers in the diner, Jake admits that he never understood why she decided to move there. Ellen responds that she does not expect him to, much to his confusion. The two then hear Ellen's phone vibrate; she tells Jake that she must leave due to "deadlines". Before departing, Ellen asks him if he knows where to find her should he need anything, to which Jake confirms he does. She then tells him it was good to see him again and returns him the handshake.

Jake meets Dr. Emil Hartman.

Jake meets Dr. Emil Hartman.

Jake arrives at the Cauldron Lake Lodge and tells the receptionist that he is there for his interview with Dr. Hartman. At the doctor's office, Jake sets up his camera when the doctor enters the room and greets him. Hartman asks him about the camera, to which Jake explains that it is for recording his interviews. However, noting that he is a writer, Hartman insists that he write instead. Starting the interview, Jake asks him to tell him what inspired his book, "The Creator's Dilemma". The doctor explains that for years he dealt with patients that seemed "trapped in a reality of their own devising" and asks Jake if he can imagine what that was like. When the reporter responds that he doesn't, Hartman admits that he couldn't either at first. As he continues, Jake's attention is drawn to a photograph of a road in the woods hanging above the doctor. Hartman notices this and stops his recounting. Jake experiences a series of bizarre visions. When he comes back to his senses, he finds himself in the lodge lobby, with Hartman talking to him. The doctor tells him that he enjoyed their chat and offers him a handshake. As he leaves, he also lets him know that he can contact him should he need anything else for his article. Now alone, Jake looks around at his surroundings in confusion.

As he drives away from the lodge, Jake calls Hal, but only reaches his voicemail. He proceeds to leave a message trying to explain what happened during the interview, but stops when he notices that his notepad is filled with notes he does not remember writing. Taking a closer look, he also finds strange scribbles and the drawing of a decapitated deer head. He then sees a man in a blue overall carrying a deer's head by the roadside. His car then enters a dark tunnel.
