She, uh, didn't know you were going to Bright Falls.
Guess she does now.
- ― Hal and Jake Fischer
Oh Deer is the first episode of the Alan Wake prequel live action mini-series, Bright Falls. This episode was released on the Bright Falls Website on April 27, 2010.
Synopsys[]
Reporter Jake Fischer arrives in Bright Falls, surveying the late-night culture at the Oh Deer Diner while prepping for his interview with Dr. Hartman. On the way to his motel, he encounters a very strange deer.[1]
Plot[]
The diver swims to his boat.
At night, a man wearing a diving suit emerges from a lake and swims towards a nearby boat, dragging a body bag with him. He loads the bag into the boat and climbs in. On the shore, he deposits the body bag and opens it, revealing a body inside a transparent plastic bag. The man then returns to the boat and heads back into the lake. When the body bag is shown again, it is now empty.

Some days earlier, as he drives through the highway in a densely wooded area, reporter Jake Fischer is on a phone conversation with his colleague, Hal, talking about a surprise that an acquaintance of theirs, Riley, has planned for them tomorrow. Hal emphasizes the importance of Jake's upcoming interview, noting that Riley is a fan of the book being covered, and tells him to get a signed copy for him. Jake asks him if there is anything else, to which Hal tells him that a woman named Libby has called again. As Jake pulls over to take a pill, Hal states that he has run out of excuses to tell her. Jake apologizes that he had to deal with that, but Hal asks him if he had been home, much to the reporter's annoyance. Jake then realizes that he ran out of his medication. He decides to end the call after Hal comments that Libby did not know that he was going to Bright Falls.
Rose Marigold talks with Jake.
On Bright Falls, Jake goes to the Oh Deer Diner. Sitting at a table, he reviews papers about Dr. Emil Hartman, unaware of the strange looks he receives from some customers. A waitress, Rose Marigold, approaches him and jokingly asks whether he is a detective or a peeping tom. Jake quips that he is both before clarifying that he is a reporter, to which Rose says "kinky". Jake then comments about the cardboard cutout standing next to the entrance. Rose explains that it is of writer Alan Wake, of whom she is a big fan, and states that she likes writers. Soon after, Rose brings Jake a meal, but the reporter tells her that he did not order anything. An attendant then brings him a birthday cake while singing "Happy Birthday to You". The rest of the customers in the diner also join in the singing.
Jake hits a deer with his car.
Afterwards, Jake returns to his car and uses his GPS to find his way to the Mountain Air Motel, at 65500 Piper Road. While driving there, he receives a call from Libby, causing him to take his eyes off the road. The moment he looks back, his car hits a deer. Dazed, Jake exits the vehicle and, with a flashlight, sees the injured deer, moaning in pain. The light suddenly goes out. Jake tries to turn it back on again when he hears the animal running into the woods, leaving only bloodstains on the road. Confused, Jake returns to his car. He notices a nearby sign announcing the 68th annual Deerfest and resumes his journey.

Behind the scenes[]
- In an interview with G4TV, series director Phillip Van was asked about the scene where Jake is "accidentally" given a large plate of food and a birthday cake in the Oh Deer Diner. Van commented about his inspiration and the purpose of the scene:
I was writing in a coffee shop that gives away free pastries at the end of the day. For a strong two dollar cup of coffee you can eat your fill of danishes and muffins. They inspired that birthday cake, the idea of them and the sugar rush they gave me. Like the giant plate of food, it was a way for Rose to show her appreciation of writers while messing with Jake a bit.
By having the rough clientele joining in on the singing, the scene is designed to give you an early window into Bright Falls and show immediately that this isn't just a voyeuristic, dismissive look at a small town, it's an interactive experience, where a number of supporting characters will have their own arcs and will come to play some greater roll in the mystery. No one should be dismissed. Characters that might function as wallpaper have a voice, and like to sing with it. This is a nod to the game and a good way to look at stories in general - any character could be of importance, none are stock or secondary; they're all of interest.
