==Background==
From the discovery of coal seams in the late 19th century to the mine's heyday and final mothballing in 1970, this is a fascinating place to explore. Although many of the buildings are in the process of being restored, the vistas are truly sensational.

The Bright Falls Mining Company was founded in 1898 and opened the Bright Falls Coal Mine, which became a major economic driver for the region and the genesis for [[Bright Falls, Washington|the town]] of the same name. It employed many immigrants from Germany, Poland,  Italy, Finland and Switzerland. 

In 1970, a volcanic eruption below Cauldron Lake resulted in the collapse and flooding of most of the mine tunnels, killing 32 workers and ultimately forcing the end of all mining in Bright Falls. In the time since, the remaining structures have been designated historical landmarks and undergoing restoration.
